Proverbs 31 on the 31st day of December, 2022.

(the words of Lemuel's mother...)

What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what? the son of my vows?

Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5) Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

10) Who can find a virtuous woman? and her price is far above rubies.

The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15) She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20) She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25) Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30) Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

new year's eve on dec 31, 2033

Doesnt it seem we may have burned the last of our reserves to survive 2022?  We pushed hard, didnt we?

But in our recuperation, in the throes of our fatigue, we see the bright light of the promise of a New Year coming: one more chance to contest, and to be shown worthy, of our Father's riches in glory.

We are of course part of his physical evidence here on the broken earth.

And we see, with that first ray of dawn, January 1, 2023, the renewed light of God's promise to us with this contesting of life.

elegy for a chair.

A respected evangelist pointed out that she didnt want to have to go to garage sales her whole life, that in order to find necessities pennies on the dollar.

That said, we all know some people that rather enjoy that kind of bargain hunting, hence the adage, "one man's trash is another's treasure".

But i was thinking.  Id maybe like a new chair, but what i really appreciate a new chair?  In reslity, id probably walk by it without noticing it, but in my imagining daydreaming of that wish, itd bring joy, the family would stand around it singing joyously.

Imagine the whoopie cushion sound of tired mike flopping down onto the new chair.

I question how much id appreciate a new chair, and in fact, if i was going to be dubious about gratitude, then certainly id expect the universe itself to be skeptical of my wish.

A Harrison-Baldwin, got at a good deal, but then a 500 humidifier.  Then we realized the temperature wasnt controlled every day in the room.  1100 for wiring for the humidifier which had to be plugged in, but no everyday climate control, because it was thought to be too expensive.  So the humidifier is essentially useless.

We contest and fight the good fight of faith.  By God, an effort was given.  Only the failures, mine and the glories, to God alone.

We try and we go for a new flashy set of violin strings, or a fancy shoshana for the Harrison-Baldwin.

To live then is to contest: the good fight of faith.  Christ makes one think few would really hit the mark; of simplicity, some imply impossibilty, where its maybe just one prescribed path.  Oh ask hundreds of millions of people bygone.

December 26, 2022, Selections.

Know that our living Lord is unspeakably pure. He is sinless, spotless, immaculate, stainless. In His person is an absolute fullness of purity that our words can never express. This fact alone changes our entire human and moral situation and outlook. We can always be sure of the most important of all positives: God is God and God is right. He is in control. Because He is God He will never change! -AW Tozer

A blossom, which, with God's care, may come to fruit, but which, left to itself, will fall to the ground with the first wind that moves the bough. On man's word hang only what it will bear. On thine own resolve depend not at all. On the promise of thy God hang time and eternity, this world and the next, thine all and the all of all thy beloved ones. -Charles Spurgeon

Glory to the God of our consolation!

From Psalm 2. and William Blake's The Lamb

....the Lord hath said unto me, "Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.  Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession..."

Sunday, December 25, 2022

"...this day have I begotten thee..." from Psalm 2, on Christmas 2022

Many are celebrating our LORD's first coming this day; let us turn our thoughts to the promise of His second coming. This is as sure as the first advent and derives a great measure of its certainty from it. He who came as a lowly man to serve will assuredly come to take the reward of His service. He who came to suffer will not be slow in coming to reign. This is our glorious hope, for we shall share His joy. -Charles Spurgeon

The sun at last went down, and the swift, eastern night cast its heavy veil over the scene. Worn out with the mental conflict, the watchings, and the exertions of the day, Abraham fell into a deep sleep, and in that sleep is soul was oppressed with a dense and dreadful darkness, such as almost stifled him, and lay like a nightmare upon his heart. -LB Cowman

The words of David in Psalm 2:

I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, "Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.....

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession..."

..be wise now therefore, O ye kings; be instructed, ye judges of the earth.  Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.  Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Soon, the King of Zion would inherit the heathen in the form of Christ's Gospel shared to the Gentiles.  How they all must have held bold dreams of victories and conquests based on these promises, but it was the open hand of forgiveness and understanding that won out, rather then the closed fist of strength and fury.

Christ in Christmas

In the capitalist Free World, the Coca Cola company helped to push the Santa Claus mythos across the mainstream: Fat Man, Coke Red suit, enjoying a soda.

It was thought harmless, a taste of joy and light for the masses.  The Christmas Spirit, however without Christ, and nary once referencing the Christmas story.

Then we're given a film called the Christmas Story in which we see modern culture come forward and devoured Christ, a kind of post-Christian quasi-Christian Christ-less season of giving.

And the boy, Ralphie, we would remember, barely smiled, but seem to just careen and pass through various scenes of little wants and traditions rendered almost meaningless.

Of life without Christ, the Bible gives us a horrifying glimpse in the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations, as Jeremiah was left behind in the ruin of Israel after the captivity.  He was witnessed horrors, borne of necessity, as the remnant struggled to survive.

Modern culture perhaps, "#thestruggleisreal" as how we too thrash about and beg in a world that is losing Christ, more and more.

However.

We are the representatives, we are the "little Christs" we are the modern disciples, we the believers.  We are the humble that the Lord sent to perplex the wise.

We can bring Christ back in our examples, and no I don't advocate "works" per se, like a regimen of course that would endear us back to God's busom, but instead a reminder for the society around us.

A reminder of.

The spirit of Christ.

The spirit of giving.

The spirit of Love.

We can be that as we hold the torch for the Christian world, just like the early light at the cave on Easter morning.

psalm 39 and 40

"And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. Deliver me from my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish."

Psalm 39

"Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are toward us: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak them, they are more than can be numbered."

Psalm 40

Spurgeon on Hope and Spiritual Restoration.

"The light may not fully come till our hopes are quite spent by waiting all day to no purpose. To the wicked the sun goes down while it is yet day: to the righteous the sun rises when it is almost night. May we not with patience wait for that heavenly light, which may be long in coming but is sure to prove itself well worth waiting for?"

"Glory be to His name! All things need making new, for they are sadly battered and worn by sin. It is time that the old vesture was rolled up and laid aside, and that creation put on her Sunday suit. But no one else can make all things new except the LORD who made them at the first; for it needs as much power to make out of evil as to make out of nothing."

Contemplation and learnings, dimensions between thought and prayer....

Always make it a practice to stir your own mind thoroughly to think through what you have easily believed. Your position is not really yours until you make it yours through suffering and study. The author or speaker from whom you learn the most is not the one who teaches you something you didn’t know before, but the one who helps you take a truth with which you have quietly struggled, give it expression, and speak it clearly and boldly. -Oswald Chambers

Immediately, talking about the synthesis between faith and knowledge, we know the heart can be mislead, and the mind will "poke holes" in our faith, but there is "heart knowledge" and "head knowledge".  Oh how the metaphors are used so differently even among the 66 books of the God's Word.

But that synthesis between faith and knowledge leads us to a kind of mystical contemplation, something blurring the dimensions between thought and prayer.....

Our equity and the old Sin Man, from Psalm 44.

"All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten three, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant...."  -Psalm 44

In all things, let brotherly love continue, a covenant of peace, justice and equity amongst our peers, our family and anyone we may happen to see; let not our equity fail.

However, if our equity falls, that's the old Sin Man that lives in us, and we can speedily repent of that, speedily rebuke and deny the old Sin Man.

This was the story of Legion, the evil spirit, that he was like the old Sin Man, and Christ had no sooner sent him on his way than he destroyed an entire heard of swine.  This is the self-destructive nature of sin guilt that lies within us, the hopelessness and calculus of hatred and doubt.

"Shalt not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.." -Psalm 44

water that satisfies for the long-term, nourishing the soul.

..every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

-Isaiah 55 KJV

Returning to our earlier bleatings about thirst meaning kind of a spiritual longing, we return to see bread and waters, and the procurement, but here on earth, none of that lasts very long.

Luckily we have an even better consolation in salvation.

Free wine and milk, which are salvation, freely given by the Father.

Eating herein is taken for spiritual nourishment, and the Father, as with the Woman At The Well, is offering something that lasts longer than a simple handful of water or a piece of bread.

It is freely given to those that long for it!

Tozer and the Darkness before the Dawn.

...God will crucify without pity those whom He desires to raise without measure!... -AW Tozer

We forget so easily that in the spiritual life there must be the darkness of the night before there can be the radiance of the dawn. Before the life of resurrection can be known, there must be the death that ends the dominion of self. -AW Tozer

St John of the Cross had "The Dark Night of the Soul", and the Apostle John had the Woman At The Well.

Each reflect a sort of longing or want that comes to a head, and is then extinguished via faith, be it called "thirst" or what have you, the kind of discovery of peace that befuddles the day-to-day grind and hustle of the secular world.

It's a kind of death to self, a kind of worldly death, just like the believer going to the afterlife, is reaching for salvation, hitting a low point of longing and then walking into the light of faith, be it a metaphorical ascent into heaven, or just retrieving water from the well.

As Christ notes, one drinking His water, will never be thirsty again, but will be satisfied; it's spiritual water that nourishes the soul and spirit, providing a calm and peace, a joy that cannot be explained in this world, but only dimly hinted to be a kind of "mystical" calm that comes through faith.

Mind-boggle in the shadow of the Tabernacle.... a psychological reading...

So I was doing some independent study for my home church's weekly Bible study, not to be working from behind, but really digging in to the meat and potatoes of the material on my own, when possible.

The Tabernacle.

I've read Neville Goddard which gives a mindset-oriented or psychological reading of so much of the Bible, and I thought to myself that in classical psychoanalysis, the mind is often portrayed as a structure, usually a singular but complex room, or more commonly an entire house.

Such as the Tabernacle.

We should note a fence, said to be a barrier between the Romans 3:23("..for all have sinned..") sin-lost and the believers, the believers authorized to enter the gate.

We see an ante-room with a light source and a table with the "showbread".

This would be ordinary consciousness, the ordinary running narrative in our head.

Meanwhile, the Inner Chamber, the Holiest of Holies with the Ark inside.  The very interior little core of the mind, in which, the Tabernacle: only one could enter, they tied a rope to him lest he fell dead.

There is the mercy seat on the lid of the Ark, solid gold.  This is basically an interface between so much and the inner little nugget of core, our very center.

Now this whole design was transferred from an actual building in Heaven that Moses was shown.  Consider that, an earthly remnant, a kind of homage, like also that man is made in the image of God.

Meme: Psalm 139

a preliminary blurb about the Apostle John's Theology.

In the Apostle John's writings, he not only has multiple titles for Christ, including the "divine Word" or "inspired Word", meaning his is a very real and pressing manifestation of God, but he also has terms for God in theological terms.

God is light: "in him was no darkness at all."

God is truth: "[if we are not true believers]then we do not the truth."

God is love: in the communion of brotherly love, we are united at once by objective truth and that communal love in our fellowship.

GOD=LIGHT=TRUTH=LOVE.

some selections from spurgeon, tozer and even Kenneth Copeland.

Jesus never built a worldly empire for Himself. But that doesn't mean He was poor. It means He was the greatest giver who ever walked the face of this earth, and it's time we started following in His footsteps. -Kenneth Copeland

The fountain is always full, always efficacious. No sinner ever went into it and found that it could not wash away his stains. Sins which were scarlet and crimson have all disappeared, and the sinner has been whiter than snow. -Charles Spurgeon

If all these things are to be had by merely knocking at mercy's door, O my soul, knock hard this morning, and ask large things of thy generous Lord. Leave not the throne of grace till all thy wants have been spread before the Lord, and until by faith thou hast a comfortable prospect that they shall be all supplied. No bashfulness need retard when Jesus invites. No unbelief should hinder when Jesus promises. No cold-heartedness should restrain when such blessings are to be obtained. -Charles Spurgeon

On my knees I have been given freedom and strength to pray, "Now, Lord, I have had enough of this-I refuse to take any more of this heaviness and oppression! This does not come from God-this comes from my enemy, the devil! Lord, in Jesus' name, I will not take it any longer— through Jesus Christ I am victor!" At these times, great burdens have just melted and rolled away—all at once. -AW Tozer

December 5, 2020 Verse of the Day.

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. -John 10

Jesus says "verily, verily.." which is in the old manuscripts, "amen, amen..."  Which colors a seemingly toss away modifier as something much more.  In today's vernacular, the pastors intersperse an "amen" hear or there, as if seconding something from the Heavenly Father.

"amen, amen..."

instead, in translation, we are given the awkward, "verily, verily..."

It is quite something to puzzle over my friends, Christ saying "amen, amen..." to begin a statement.

"the door of the sheep..."

is a translation of "ho thyra probaton..."

Psalm 32 from Young's Literal Translation.

O the happiness of him whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.

O the happiness of a man, To whom Jehovah imputeth not iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

When I have kept silence, become old have my bones, Through my roaring all the day.

David speaks of a pressure exerted on him before he confessed his sins.  Everyone knows in part, this pressure that comes from sinful behavior, to let it go and give in to corrupted things: bad acts torment most people who know better, they eat at a person in ways we don't readily understand.

If we wanted a mystical reading, we could see this third verse as a man fighting against himself, how people so often work against their own best interests in the interests of expediency and perceived gains.

Such is often the way that one bad act spawns more bad acts, such as one bad act dictating bad acts to cover the first bad act, kind of a "self-defeating prophecy" that goes to work in one's life.  Many say this is the Eternal Enemy, Satan himself, and his demons, at work in our hearts that lead us to these bad acts.

Since the Age of Enlightenment, we now blame ourselves for our bad acts; we don't blame demons for types of mental disease.  Though we had men like Kierkegaard and Spinoza extolling God to their fellow thinkers, God had partly fallen away, leaving man in a cloak of guilt and self-blame.

If only, that first verse: a covering for our iniquities, the erasure of blame!

That third verse again: his roaring.  He had perhaps a spiritual emptiness before he handed it over to God, and he worked against himself all day, and was spiritually empty during the night.

Until God.

He found God a refuge and a ready and willing help, a deliverer.

O the happiness of him

as the King James has it:

"Blessed is the man..."

Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. -John 8

Our sighs are sacred things, too hallowed for us to tell abroad. We keep our longings to our Lord alone. -Charles Spurgeon

Human curiosity and pride often combine to drive us to try to understand acts of God which are plainly outside the field of human understanding. We dislike to admit that we do not know what is going on, so we torture our minds trying to fathom the mysterious ways of the Omniscient One. It's hard to conceive of a more fruitless task... -AW Tozer

The lake must be calm if the heavens are to be reflected on its surface. -LB Cowman

We need shield and buckler, and when we implicitly trust God, even as the chick trusts the hen, we find His truth arming us from head to foot. The LORD cannot lie; He must be faithful to His people; His promise must stand. This sure truth is all the shield we need. Behind it we defy the fiery darts of the enemy. -Charles Spurgeon

Life without war is impossible in the natural or the supernatural realm. It is a fact that there is a continuing struggle in the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual areas of life. -Oswald Chambers

Our perspective matters. If we chose to continually see things from man’s perspective, we will be discouraged and disappointed with the Lord. If we choose to get into the Word and see life from His perspective, we find joy peace and excitement by drawing closer to Him. -Daily Disciples.Org

It is the height of grace that Jehovah should be in covenant with man, a I feeble, sinful, and dying creature. Yet the LORD has solemnly entered into a faithful compact with us, and from that covenant He will never turn aside. In virtue of this covenant we are safe. As lions and wolves are driven off by shepherds, so shall all noxious influences be chased away. The LORD will give us rest from disturbers and destroyers; the evil beasts shall cease out of the land. -Charles Spurgeon

"I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me and thou art become my salvation."

"The stone which the builders refused is become the stone of the corner. This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.  This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Daily, morning. December 3, 2022.

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. -John 6

On the one hand, we are still a caterpillar; on the other hand, there are signs that we are becoming a butterfly. The process of transformation has begun, but it is not yet complete. We are all on the way of transformation; we are in the process of being transformed. -Witness Lee

Having pronounced his Church positively full of beauty, our Lord confirms his praise by a precious negative, "There is no spot in thee." As if the thought occurred to the Bridegroom that the carping world would insinuate that he had only mentioned her comely parts, and had purposely omitted those features which were deformed or defiled, he sums up all by declaring her universally and entirely fair, and utterly devoid of stain. -Charles Spurgeon

According to Paul's word, we need to behold the Lord with an unveiled face. There should not be any veils between us and the Lord. If we are unveiled we shall be a mirror beholding and reflecting the glorious image of the Lord. Whenever we behold Him in a direct way without any veil, without any insulation, we experience His transfusion. We are infused with the divine electricity. -Witness Lee

Don't pity yourself. Don't be afraid to tell God your troubles. He knows all about your troubles. There is a little song that says, "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen," but there's Somebody who knows, all right. And our Fellow Sufferer still retains a fellow feeling for our pains and still remembers in the skies His tears, His agonies and cries, though he's now at the right hand of the Father Almighty, sitting crowned in glory, awaiting, of course, that great coronation day that yet is to come. -AW Tozer

The saved may well adore their Lord for his conquests in them, since the arrows of their natural hatred are snapped, and the weapons of their rebellion broken. What victories has grace won in our evil hearts! How glorious is Jesus when the will is subdued, and sin dethroned! As for our remaining corruptions, they shall sustain an equally sure defeat, and every temptation, and doubt, and fear, shall be utterly destroyed. In the Salem of our peaceful hearts, the name of Jesus is great beyond compare: he has won our love, and he shall wear it. Even thus securely may we look for victories by us. -Charles Spurgeon

As is said, of worries over the church and our own condition, "i reckon the troubles of this time do not compare to the glory to come..."  Meanwhile, I'm preparing a word study stand-alone page on Psalm 32, and the YLT has it, "O the happiness of man...".

Let us not forget the mercies that abound around us, lest we should stumble and fall; that is the key of strength made perfect in weakness: the gift of mercy and grace, removing blemishes and making the broken and hopeless righteous and filled with new hope.

Only with God and the Son.

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. -1 John 1:5

The moral law does not consider our weaknesses as human beings; in fact, it does not take into account our heredity or infirmities. It simply demands that we be absolutely moral. The moral law never changes, either for the highest of society or for the weakest in the world. It is enduring and eternally the same. The moral law, ordained by God, does not make itself weak to the weak by excusing our shortcomings. It remains absolute for all time and eternity. If we are not aware of this, it is because we are less than alive. Once we do realize it, our life immediately becomes a fatal tragedy. -Oswald Chambers

It is a trap to presume that God wants to make us perfect specimens of what He can do— God’s purpose is to make us one with Himself. -Oswald Chambers

Always to have an eye to the LORD's eye and an ear for the LORD's voice--this is the right state for the godly man. His God is near him, filling the horizon of his vision, leading the way of his life, and furnishing the theme of his meditation. What vanities we should avoid, what sins we should overcome, what virtues we should exhibit, what joys we should experience if we did indeed set the LORD always before us! -Charles Spurgeon

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds... -Hebrews 1

Once a person is born into God’s family, nothing can ever destroy that relationship—not even sin. However, disobedience grieves the Father and hinders fellowship and communication with Him. -Charles Stanley

Her deformities of sin are removed; but more, she has through her Lord obtained a meritorious righteousness by which an actual beauty is conferred upon her. Believers have a positive righteousness given to them when they become "accepted in the beloved" (Eph. 1:6). Nor is the Church barely lovely, she is superlatively so. Her Lord styles her "Thou fairest among women." -Charles Spurgeon

If God has singled you out to be a special object of His grace you may expect Him to honor you with stricter discipline and greater suffering than less favored ones are called upon to endure.... -AW Tozer

Nothing can satisfy the entire man but the Lord's love and the Lord's own self. Saints have tried to anchor in other roadsteads, but they have been driven out of such fatal refuges. -Charles Spurgeon

December 1, 2022 Verse of the Day.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. -John 1

The disciples were blessed to have the opportunity to live and interact with the incarnate Christ.
